Scientists warn about the presence of asbestos in cosmetics of well-known brands.
The presence of asbestos in cosmetic products is a concern because asbestos has been linked to cancer and other serious health issues when it is inhaled or ingested over a long period of time. The FDA in the United States and the European Commission in the EU have strict guidelines and testing requirements to ensure that cosmetic products are safe and free from harmful contaminants, including asbestos.
It is important to note that the presence of trace amounts of asbestos does not necessarily mean that a product is unsafe. In fact, many experts believe that the risk of harm from trace amounts of asbestos in cosmetics is very low. However, companies have a responsibility to ensure that their products are safe and free from contaminants, and they should take steps to minimize the risk of contamination in their products.
“As a consumer, it is important to be aware of the potential risks associated with certain cosmetic products and to make informed choices about the products you use”, warned Professor Jan Tytgat, Toxicologist at the KU Leuven. In an interview, he warned about the presence of asbestos in popular makeup products such as eyeshadows, whereby this toxic substance has been found in talc. Talc may naturally occur in nature where asbestos is present. With the right procedures, the toxic material is filtered out of the talc before it is processed in cosmetics. Unfortunately, many talc mines in the world have bad working conditions and sanitary issues, where the EU can’t verify if strict manufacturing practices are followed. This may result in the presence of asbestos in cosmetic products we use almost daily.
Consumers should be aware of the fact that imported products from outside the EU do not offer the same guarantees when it comes to product safety and product testing since the EU regulator does not know what manufacturers put in their products. If a cheap product looks too good to be true, do not buy it as it has the highest chance of containing ingredients that have not been properly mined or tested for safety. Your personal health is important. Take good care of it.
